What does the SDF actually pay for?
Unlike a typical tourist tax, Bhutan's SDF is written directly into the country's "High Value, Low Volume" tourism policy. It funds free healthcare and free education for Bhutanese citizens, upgrades to rural infrastructure, and environmental and cultural conservation — including the trail maintenance and reforestation that keeps treks like Druk Path and Jumolhari open. The fee is also Bhutan's way of capping mass tourism: rather than maximizing visitor numbers, the country is one of the only carbon-negative nations on Earth, and its tourism policy is built to keep it that way.
Visa process, step by step
- Prepare a valid passport, recent passport photo, arrival and departure dates, and payment details.
- Apply through Bhutan's official visa portal, or ask your tour operator or hotel to apply on your behalf.
- You pay the $40 visa fee and the SDF for your full trip length, typically as part of your booking.
- Allow up to five working days for a correctly completed application to be reviewed.
- The full visa stamp is issued on arrival in Bhutan, at Paro International Airport or a land border crossing.
