Depart Thimphu in the morning and climb to Dochula Pass (3,116m). Walk among the 108 Druk Wangyal chortens commissioned by the Queen Mother — on clear mornings the entire high Himalayan chain is visible. Descend to Wangdue Phodrang Dzong, an imposing fortress rebuilt after a 2012 fire, dramatically positioned above the confluence of the Punakha and Daga rivers. Lunch in Wangdue town.
